From TV-Centered to Fireplace-Focused: A Great Room Reimagined

The TV in the great room of this Bountiful, Utah home was being relocated to another room. As such, the space needed a new focal point. After I reoriented the sofa to face the fireplace and windows, the space immediately felt calmer and more intentional. The updated fireplace façade, new shutters, and a styled storage console helped anchor the room, while layered lighting, an updated accent chair, and a soft olive tree brought warmth and dimension. With improved traffic flow between the kitchen and living space, the room now functions as beautifully as it looks — designed less for screens and more for conversation, quiet evenings, and gathering.

The new storage console anchors the room and provides thoughtful storage.

The fireplace now acts as the focal point of the room.

A new piece of art provides visual interest, especially when the room is viewed from the adjacent kitchen. I chose something simple, in form and color, allowing the fireplace to remain the true focal point of the room.

I added a mirror to an adjacent wall to reflect light from the windows and provide a view of the fireplace from most angles.

BEFORE: The original sofa, rug, and art above the fireplace were retained.

BEFORE: The traffic flow was cut off on the right side of the sofa. Since the Sofa faced the TV rather the the fireplace, the TV became the natural focal point.
