When a Full Remodel Isn't the Right Answer

A full remodel isn't always the right solution.

Sometimes it's the budget. Sometimes it's timing. And sometimes, as in this powder room, you know a larger renovation is on the horizon that will likely change the layout entirely. Investing heavily today simply doesn't make sense.

So the question became: How do we make this room more enjoyable for the next year or two?

Rather than replacing everything, we worked with what was already here. The vanity, countertop, mirror, and tile all had plenty of life left in them. A fresh coat of soft green paint shifted the entire feel of the room, complementing the warm wood cabinetry while giving the space a calmer, more collected atmosphere. Matte black hardware and a new faucet tied the existing black accents together, and a small table lamp added warmth that overhead lighting alone could never achieve.

One of my favorite additions is the artwork above the toilet. Instead of purchasing mass-produced prints, I sourced a pair of bird illustrations from a local Northern Utah artist with a small but growing presence. Those pieces add personality and make the room feel more connected to the people and place it belongs to.

The result isn't a brand-new powder room—and it wasn't meant to be. It's a thoughtful refresh that makes the space more inviting every day while buying time until the larger renovation happens.

Good design isn't always about spending the most money. Sometimes it's about knowing where to spend it, and creating a home you enjoy living in today while planning for tomorrow.
